M&A in the Technology, Media & Telecommunications (TMT) Sector

Despite one of the most active M&A markets since 2007, global dealmakers at the Milken Institute 2019 Global Conference in Los Angeles shared their predictions about a potential market peak, and new factors impacting deal making, including geopolitical forces and a push toward socially conscious investing. The value of US M&A in TMT for Q1/19 was up 29% compared to the first quarter of 2018, and technology made up the top sector by deal count for the quarter, per Mergermarket data, with 214 tech deals. Yet the momentum may be shifting due to regulatory concerns about labor laws (wealth inequality), security concerns (Huawei bashing) and protectionism (trade war US-CN). Despite healthy deal volume in tech now, it may not be the case in 5-10 years, as regulatory bodies such as CFIUS in the US and MOFCOM in China, data privacy rules like GDPR, the rise of protectionism in Germany, and a general push to keep technology at home could dampen deal volume. In a world of uncertainty and “border protection,” B2B business models fair better than mostly market share driven freemium models of the B2C market.
