Aerospace & Defense
M&A in the Aerospace & Defense Sector
Aerospace manufacturing is a high-technology industry that produces aircraft, guided missiles, space vehicles, aircraft engines, propulsion units, and related parts. Most of the industry is geared toward governmental work, although commercial airlines are the other significant industry segment.
The Aerospace & Defense industry is dominated by large Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), although there are many high-quality smaller companies who provide support services including parts and sub-assemblies. Electronic, hardware and software components of defense, which include companies such as THALES, are clients.
While deal value in 2018 saw a 20% dip from 2017, Q4 finished strong with an average deal size of $664.3 million, the second highest quarter in the last three years. 2018 was also 83% higher than the ten-year average. The industry appears on trend to keep up the momentum into 2019, with a key focus being the broadening of portfolios through acquisitions of mid-sized companies offering additional skill sets. Boeing and Airbus are expected to drive valuations through the next five years.
